Articles like this remind me how much I need to delve into the Metal Gear Solid games. I just picked up the HD collection and MGS4 for the PS3 but haven’t touched them. I’m tempted to play through MGS on the PSOne and tackle them in order (release, not chronological).
I agree with the sense of accomplishment that stems from self-imposed gameplay limitations. That’s a big part of what attracts me to Achievements in games: exploring parts or playing under restrictions I wouldn’t otherwise.
Metal Gear is my favorite video game series of all time. I just finished an epic 4 month replay of MG-MGS4 last night. A few things to keep in mind:
The original 2D Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 are included in the HD collection as a MGS3 bonus. These games have some key story beats and you should read the Wikipedia entries on them if you aren’t going to play them. 2 is maybe not worth playing, 1 definitely is.
The original PS1 MGS has aged very poorly, and you may want to consider the Game Cube remake if you have it available to you. A lot of folks hate this remake because it is tonally different than the original, and also much easier. I find it much more playable, however.
These are all amazing, ballsy games that go where no other games will. I’d love to hear your impressions if you do play them.
